"Is Valery Gergiev easing up? This might seem a futile question to anybody caught in the vortex of his whirlwind life, since he is as renowned for his workaholism as he is for his inspiring appearances on the conductor's rostrum.
But can we detect a hint of rationalism creeping into his crammed schedule when he says, "One has to ask oneself these days whether it is not more important to take a real vacation with the family"?
A vacation? Gergiev? The two seem mutually exclusive. But maybe there are other signs that, having reached the magic age of 50, as he did at the beginning of this month, he has been tempted to slow down, or at least to go less fast."
